 England - Canterbury Cathedral
Select All Virtual Tours and Accompanying Text For This Attraction

Canterbury Cathedral, at the center of the historic city in the heart of Kent, dates back to the arrival from Rome of St. Augustine, the first Archbishop of Canterbury, in 597 AD.

The tranquil Cloister is a reminder of the period when Canterbury was a Benedictine monastery. Community meetings and the training of young monks took place around the square.

Rounded Romanesque arches and intricately carved capitals surround the Chapel of Our Lady Undercroft in the early-12th-century Western Crypt of Canterbury Cathedral.

The sanctified atmosphere of Canterbury Cathedral's Nave, completed in 1405, is created by the soaring arches which draw attention to the Pulpitum at the Eastern end.

The imposing Christ Church Gate of Canterbury Cathedral, adorned with an inset sculpture of Christ and the arms of Henry VII, lies at the end of the narrow, shop-lined Mercery Lane.

Some of the most historically significant elements of Canterbury Cathedral are its medieval tombs for historic figures such as Edward the Black Prince, King Henry IV, and numerous archbishops.

Norman architecture, with its characteristic square towers, round-topped arches, and barrel-shaped vaulting, arrived in Britain in 1066 when Duke William of Normandy conquered England.

Even though the castle is in ruins, its thick-walled, solid, and square architecture with small and infrequent windows identify it as a Norman structure.

Take a fascinating step back in time by exploring one of several sites of Norman castle ruins. Norman architecture was the predominant style of structures built in England between 1066 and 1200.
